Test Operations Lead

Stratolaunch is developing an air-launch platform to contribute to high-speed research and development.  The goal of Stratolaunch is to use the air-launch platform for enabling technologies that may not exist otherwise.  Stratolaunch has the potential for creating technology development opportunities for commercial, philanthropic, and governmental organizations to collect rich and actionable data and drive advancements in science, research, and technology.

As the Test Operations Lead on the history-making Stratolaunch Carrier Aircraft, the world’s largest-wingspan aircraft, you will play a critical role in achieving new milestones in aviation. 

You will provide effective results in two arenas; long-term mission approvals with regulatory agencies, customers and other organizations, and mission-focused flight test support for Stratolaunch experimental aircraft development.  You should possess experience working with governmental regulatory agencies, and the professional persistence to submit, track and obtain required Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approvals.  Your crucial position also offers the opportunity to participate in flight test planning and successful mission execution.  Mission tasks may include supporting ground tests as Test Conductor or Flight Test Engineer, preparing system test plans and flight cards, coordinating required resources with test ranges and other users, and Mission Control Center team responsibilities.

As a key member of the Flight Operations team, you will have an essential role in meeting all Flight Operations objectives.  You must establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues on a small, agile design-to-flight team.  You will be challenged with bringing unique and complex aircraft from initial airworthiness to operational use.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

·         Lead the submittal and approval process to obtain Stratolaunch launch licenses from the FAA

·         Lead the submittal and approval process for the carrier aircraft experimental Airworthiness certificate, and Letters of Authorization for pilots and mission airspace, with the FAA and other agencies

·         Manage the Stratolaunch operations team regulatory coordination requirements, to include managing sub-contractors

·         Develop and report on the launch license project plan, and linkage to critical path activities

·         Work with the Stratolaunch Safety Manager in preparation of the systems safety elements of the launch license application

·         Work with the Government Relations team to ensure accurate and consistent representation of technical information for the company

·         Build and maintain strong working relationships with FAA and government test range offices. Coordinate written support agreements with regulatory or supporting agencies

·         Analyze technical data for various projects, such as aircraft system design, performance calculations, system margins, test and operational plans. Develop test cards and procedures, and participate and test plan and review processes

·         Demonstrate potential to participate in ground and flight test events as Test Conductor or control room team member. Ensure availability of test and range resources for specific test missions

·         Travel, as needed, to support the launch approval process and other tasks for the Director

·         Demonstrate integrity, accountability and initiative to fulfill commitments

Northrop Grumman Mission Systems has an opening for an Aeronautical Engineer to join our Flight Test team. This position will be located in Baltimore, MD.

 

The Aeronautical Engineer will become a member of a unique organization within Northrop Grumman that provides the venue to flexibly showcase discriminating capabilities by taking Company products from the lab to the airborne environment on a fleet of highly modified testbed aircraft. The business area is focused on the design, analysis, modification, integration, ground and flight testing, and airworthiness certification of airborne surveillance and communication technologies onto manned and unmanned flying testbed aircraft.

 

The Aeronautical Engineer will be the department’s aerodynamic subject matter expert and will design and analyze aerodynamic modifications for our flying test bed aircraft fleet. The Candidate will work closely with a multi-disciplined team comprised of other Engineers, Pilots, Maintainers and Inspectors throughout the entire lifecycle of the air vehicle modification programs. The Candidate will also be a principal department interface with large Aeronautical Engineering staffing at other Northrop Grumman sectors and campuses.

 

The Aeronautical Engineer must be capable of leading and mentoring team members from other disciplines on aerodynamic design and analysis techniques and best practices related to air vehicle modification and configuration design. A strong background in the development of conceptual/preliminary aircraft design and aircraft modification is paramount, including configuration design, air vehicle integration and preliminary outer mold line surface design and loft. In addition, She/He should be well versed in core Flight Science disciplines including aerodynamics, performance, propulsion, stability and control, CFD, and mass properties. The Engineer will be expected to review a variety of data sources, assess an aerodynamic risk level, prepare briefings and communicate results both internally to Flight Test Department personnel during design and readiness reviews as well as externally to various Customers' Airworthiness Subject Matter Experts.

 

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Performing and leading aerodynamic design and analysis activities for air vehicle modifications

• Using an array of analysis tools ranging from low order methods to processing, interrogating and analyzing high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics simulations

• Developing aerodynamic loads to be used by Loads & Dynamics Engineers and Structural Analysts

• Supporting flight and ground test activities, including identifying test instrumentation and test data reduction and analysis

• Analyzing, investigating, and resolving non-routine problems

• Reviewing and preparing flight test plans and reports

• Assessing effects of modifications on aircraft performance and flying qualities, including added drag on takeoff and climb performance and effects on aircraft stability and control

 

The successful Candidate will be a self-starter, a team player, and possess the ability to research and effectively resolve technical issues both independently and as part of a large multi-disciplined team. •Conducting demonstration flights with customers, government officials, or other personnel aboard to exhibit system performance and capabilities.

 

Basic Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s Degree plus 10 years progressive/related leadership experience with a minimum of 5 years test pilot experience.

•Must be a certified test pilot through a nationally recognized military test pilot school, or equivalent military training.

•Minimum 1500 hours First Pilot (USN/USMC) or Primary (USAF) flight time in turbojet, turbofan or turboprop aircraft.  

•A commercial pilot certification.

•Experience in civilian /FAA certifications and requirements.

•Current, active, Secret Clearance required. Ability to secure a Top Secret Clearance is also required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

•Past experience in aircraft modifications, configuration and control, and technical / operational review boards. Familiar with government test organizations, ranges and processes.

•Experience with Airworthiness Programs and requirements.
