General Description

The primary responsibility of this position is to lead a Mission Control team during stratospheric missions. To also help refine and develop the procedures, and operations necessary to operate World View's Stratollite system within the Mission Control Room. As such experience with Flight Test, and / or procedure development is required.


Additional responsibilities may encompass any or all other aspects of flying a mission including: command and telemetry monitoring of the vehicle, coordinating with payload providers, and communicating with both external regulatory and internal World View entities during flight. Leadership during flight operations will require maintaining authority over all critical phases of flight and acting as the approval authority for the issuance of all vital/major commands for the vehicle and the mission.


Summary of Essential Job Functions

·        Leads a team of Mission Control operators in all aspects of a stratospheric mission from planning to mission execution to reporting.

·        Identifies operational shortfalls and problems by observing and studying operational processes, tools (HW & SW), organizational structures, systems and subsystems

·        Develops operational solutions by defining, studying, estimating, and screening alternative solutions and determining impact on total flight system.

·        Anticipates operational problems by studying telemetry streams, GUIs, modes of operation, system and subsystem limits; and monitoring ground systems and flight unit performance.

·        Improves operational results by determining success criteria, studying, evaluating, and recommending process re-design and implements changes. 

·        Provides operational leadership information by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing operating and engineering data and trends.

·        Maintains configuration control of Mission Control hardware, software, and procedures.



·        BS degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) + 5 years of Mission Control Operations experience with leadership experience: NASA Mission Control, Flight Test Control Room, Squadron Operations Center (SOC), Air Operations Center (AOC) or similar control room environment. (UAS, UAV, Satellite, Space, High Altitude Ballooning, etc.)


·        MS degree in STEM + 3 years of Mission Control Operations experience with leadership experience

·        Ability to understand software, mechanical, and electrical subsystems

·        Engineering expertise in one of the following areas: Flight Test, Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Mechanical, or Operations

·        Experience in one of the following areas is desired, but not required:

o   Experience in setting up a mission control environment including procedure development

o   GUI development

o   Mission Control training, planning, requirements definition, and hardware specification


Ability Requirements

·        Aptitude to quickly grasp complex systems and how they relate to one another

·        MS Office skills to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint (Visio, Project desired).

·        Significant experience writing and editing technical documents

·        Capable of working in a highly collaborative team environment

·        Basic understanding of meteorology is highly desired

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate and driven Flight Test Engineer to join our flight test team. This role requires a wide range of knowledge and skill associated with planning and execution of development and certification flight testing on experimental CTOL/VTOL fly-by-wire aircraft. Applicants will be responsible for flight test planning, test execution as a Test Director, test data analysis and flight test reporting, flight test simulator development, and other duties associated with air vehicle certification. Flight test at Joby Aviation is very fast-paced, and we are looking for independent individuals who can deal with frequently changing test scenarios. Previous experience and/or training as a Flight Test Engineer is highly desired. Near-term flight testing is planned to be conducted from a remote location; applicants must be willing to spend regular time away from home.


  • Develop a test program to expand the envelope and capabilities of our vehicles from experimental development through certification flight test
