SFTE Fellow Nomination and Acceptance

Jack Styers was inducted as an SFTE Fellow in 1994. His career in flight test engineering spanned an era from hand recorded information to fully automated real-time computational data systems

Professional Achievements and Technical Leadership

  • Extensive Evaluations: As a supervisor and Assistant Chief of the P&FQ Branch at the AFFTC, he participated in evaluations of nearly every aircraft in the Air Force inventory, including fighters (F-84, F-100, F-4), bombers (B-36, B-52, B-58), and unique aircraft like the SR-71 and YF-12.
  • Project Engineering: He served as a project engineer for numerous high-profile programs, such as the B-36F heavy weight performance tests and aircraft record-setting attempts with the F-104 and F-106.
  • Training and Devlopment: His skills as a teacher of the fundamentals of test planning, test conduct, data analysis, and reporting were without parallel. He personally trained more Air Force personnel in the rudiments of P&FQ testing than any other one individual. His former "students" were found throughout the flight test community with contractors, the FAA, NASA, and the Army, as well as with the Air Force.
  • Military Service: He served as a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps during World War II, flying F-4U Corsairs and F-6F Hellcats.
  • Career History: His initial assignment was as the performance and flying qualities engineer on the H-23B helicopter followed by assignments as project engineer on the B-36F heavy weight performance tests, the H-19B helicopter, the Cessna XL-19C turboprop, the YF-84J and the F-101A. In 1956, he was appointed an engineering supervisor, and in 1960, he was assigned as Assistant Chief, Performance and Flying Qualities Branch. As a supervisor he has directly participated in the performance and ffying qualities evaluations of almost every airplane in the Air Force inventory. Some of the fighter airplanes that he helped to evaluate (and fly if it had more than one seat) are; the F-84, F-86, F-100, F-101, F-104 and F-4. His first supersonie ride was in the back seat of the TF-86F! Bomber airplanes in which Jack has flown and evaluated include; the B-26, B-36, B-47, B-57, B-52 and the B-58. He also directly participated in test programs where airplanes were flown and evaluated such as; the C-119, C-130, C-131, YC-134, C-133 and the KC-135. He has also been involved in programs that evaluated some of our more unique airplanes such as; the MeDonnell Model 119A, the YF-12, B-70, and the SR-71.
