2024 Winner
HEAVEN Project - Hydrogen-Powered Airplane
The James S McDonnell award for outstanding team achievement in flight test was awarded to the HEAVEN project, a European Commission funded project which designed, developed and integrated a liquid hydrogen and high power density fuel cell system into an existing general aviation aircraft to support flight testing conducted in Slovenia in September 2023.
The test team was comprised of personnel from multiple organizations across Europe, including Pipistrel, Zuba Flight Test, H2Fly and Air Liquide. Their efforts led to several achievements, including the first piloted flight of a liquid Hydrogen powered aircraft, and a record breaking 3 hour flight.
The HEAVEN team's efforts to integrate a new complex technology, while working in a complex multinational regulatory environment and operating a novel technology safely from a commercial airport are deservedly recognized with the 2024 James S McDonnell award.
