Volunteer Leadership Opportunity: STEM Coordinator for EAA AirVenture 2026

Volunteer Leadership Opportunity: STEM Coordinator for EAA AirVenture 2026

Are you passionate about STEM education and SFTE? We are looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to step into a leadership role for the SFTE STEM outreach event at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI – one of the world’s largest aviation gatherings!

This is an ideal opportunity for an SFTE member looking to take on a meaningful leadership role without the full-time commitment of board service. Take the lead in coordinating a well-established, hands-on STEM activity on behalf of SFTE in coordination with AIAA, EAA, and Microsoft. It’s a great way to get involved at a higher level, gain experience, and make a tangible impact in STEM outreach.

The activity for the dozen or so middle school students lasts for about 30 minutes each session, and runs two days from 8:30 to 2:00.  The activity uses established curriculum for both XBOX and Xplane platforms and only minor modifications needed, if any, to accommodate the AirVenture focus for the year.

Timeline & Transition:

This year’s event is being led by Rachel McFalls-Brown, who will also assist with the transition and preliminary planning for next year.  You’ll have ample support as you prepare to take the reins for the 2026 event.

Why Volunteer?

  • Make a difference by inspiring the next generation of engineers and aviators.
  • Build your network with professionals from top STEM organizations.
  • Minimal prep work - the curriculum and logistics are already in place.
  • AirVenture entry & travel reimbursement - there are some SFTE funds to assist with travel expenses for the coordinator role if not already company-sponsored.

What's Involved?

  • Attend brief monthly coordination calls, starting in January, coordinating the activity with our partner organizations, AIAA, EAA, Microsoft.
  • Review and adjust the existing curriculum, as required, to align with the event’s annual theme.
  • Get familiar with Microsoft Flight Simulator as well as Microsoft Xbox controls (as required).
  • Provide on-site support in Oshkosh, WI July 20-26, 2026
    • 1 evening for equipment setup (the Monday PM)
    • 2 days for classroom sessions ( Tuesday and Thursday 0800-1400)
This is a turn-key leadership role with built-in support and an exciting platform to showcase your commitment to SFTE and your passion for STEM outreach. This is a fantastic chance to make an impact, build connections, and represent your chapter and SFTE at a high-profile event.
